Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has announced that she will once again approach the Supreme Court regarding the deletion of voter names from West Bengal’s electoral rolls. The announcement comes after the Election Commission released the updated voter list following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), in which slightly over 32 lakh names were retained as eligible, leaving approximately 3,20,000 names deleted from the adjudication list.
On Wednesday morning, Mamata filed her nomination from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, submitting the papers at the Survey Building. Following the filing, she expressed concern over the unresolved voter deletions, stating, “I say this with grief: so many people’s names have been deleted. Even though I filed a Supreme Court case, out of all the doubtful names, only 32 lakh have been reinstated. But 58 lakh remain unresolved.”
Mamata emphasized that the names in the adjudication list should be restored, recalling the Supreme Court’s earlier directions. She questioned the rationale behind freezing the voter list while the tribunal process is ongoing, warning that even if names are reinstated later, affected voters could be prevented from casting their votes. She reiterated her intention to return to the Supreme Court to secure justice for those impacted.
