The Kaliachak incident in Malda district has entered a critical phase with the National Investigation Agency stepping in to investigate the case. The move follows intervention by the Supreme Court of India and the Election Commission of India, with the central agency now tasked with uncovering the alleged larger conspiracy behind the hostage-taking of seven judicial officers on April 1. The focus of the probe is to identify the key orchestrators and determine whether the incident was part of a coordinated network.
At the centre of the investigation is Mofakkerul Islam, who was arrested by the state CID from Bagdogra Airport and is currently in custody amid ongoing legal proceedings. While his legal counsel has stated that no formal custody request from the NIA has yet been received, Mofakkerul has indicated his willingness to cooperate with investigators. The agency is expected to question him further as it examines the sequence of events and possible links.
The case has widened with the arrest of Shahjahan Ali Qadri, who faces allegations of blocking a national highway and inciting violence. Meanwhile, the political dimension has intensified after Rezaul Karim accused Sabina Yasmin, a senior leader of the All India Trinamool Congress, of being the “mastermind” behind the incident. The allegation has added a new layer of controversy, further escalating tensions ahead of the elections.
Mofakkerul Islam, however, refrained from endorsing any such claims, stating that it would be premature to name individuals at this stage of the investigation. His lawyers have alleged that the arrest is politically motivated, arguing that he is being made a scapegoat. These competing narratives have turned the case into a focal point of political confrontation in the state.
What began as a protest over voter list deletions has now evolved into a major law-and-order and constitutional issue. With polling approaching in Malda and surrounding regions, the NIA’s findings are expected to play a significant role in shaping the political discourse, as attention remains fixed on identifying the alleged mastermind and the broader implications of the case.
