Political tensions escalated in Purshura of Hooghly after a campaign rally turned violent, leaving at least 10 people injured from both sides. Workers and supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party and All India Trinamool Congress clashed during a procession, triggering panic in the area and prompting immediate police intervention.
According to reports, BJP supporters led by candidate Biman Ghosh were campaigning in Kelepara when an altercation broke out near the residence of a local Trinamool leader. Verbal abuse allegedly led to protests, which quickly escalated into a physical confrontation involving sticks, bricks and rods. Both parties have levelled serious allegations against each other. BJP claimed that their peaceful rally was attacked, including assaults on women supporters. On the other hand, Trinamool leaders alleged that BJP workers initiated the violence and even accused Ghosh of leading the attack. Trinamool candidate Partha Hazari said the violence was an attempt to create unrest amid electoral setbacks.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals as police arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the sequence of events. The incident has heightened tensions in the poll-bound region, with residents expressing concern over safety during the ongoing campaign.
