“We won’t give Burnol-Boroline, we’ll give ice cream”: Mamata Banerjee's sharp retort to EC

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the opposition and the Election Commission of India over a controversial “Burnol-Boroline” reference in a viral post, escalating political tensions ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Responding strongly, she challenged her rivals to fight directly among the people instead of allegedly using agencies to intimidate voters.

The controversy stems from a viral social media message, reportedly linked to an election-related communication, which assured voters of safety while warning miscreants of strict action. The post used references to burn-relief ointments like Burnol and Boroline, suggesting that those attempting to disrupt voting would “feel the heat” and should keep such ointments ready. It further indicated that any attempt to interfere with the electoral process would invite strict consequences beyond symbolic warnings.

Reacting to the development during her rallies in Pingla and Tamluk, Mamata Banerjee adopted a sarcastic tone and dismissed the messaging as an attempt to spread fear. Referring to threats of “burning” opponents, she remarked that instead of revenge, she would offer “ice cream” to cool them down. She added that the current heat demands calmness, highlighting what she described as a fundamental difference in political approach.

Banerjee further accused the opposition and central authorities of attempting to influence the electoral environment through intimidation tactics, claiming they lacked the confidence to win a fair contest. She directly challenged her opponents, stating that those “fighting from behind” should come forward and engage with voters openly, asserting that the people of Bengal would deliver their verdict.

The remarks came as part of an intense campaign schedule that included rallies in Pingla, Tamluk, and Jagatballavpur. With the election atmosphere already charged, the “Burnol” controversy and Mamata Banerjee’s response have added a fresh layer to the ongoing political confrontation in the state.
