BJP alleges bomb attack in Nandigram, TMC denies allegations ahead of polls

Nandigram in East Midnapore has once again witnessed a surge in political tension ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, with allegations of bombing incidents and recovery of explosives raising serious concerns over law and order. The situation escalated after a BJP leader alleged that bombs were hurled near his residence within 24 hours of filing a police complaint, triggering panic among residents.

The latest controversy centres around Abbas Beg, a BJP minority cell leader, who claimed he was threatened by Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Sufiyan during a rally on April 15. Beg alleged that he was verbally abused and intimidated at a political event in Nayanan while campaigning activities were underway in support of TMC candidate Pabitra Kar. Following the alleged threat, he lodged a complaint at the Nandigram police station.

According to Beg, the situation worsened the next night when bombs were allegedly hurled targeting his house, prompting immediate police intervention. He further claimed that fresh explosives were recovered from the vicinity, adding to fears of escalating violence. However, Sheikh Sufiyan has categorically denied all allegations, stating that no such threats were issued and challenging the complainant to provide evidence if any such incident took place.

The incident has intensified the political confrontation in Nandigram, a constituency already known for high-stakes contests. While the BJP has cited the episode as an example of political violence, the Trinamool Congress has dismissed the claims as baseless. Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, though no arrests have been made so far, leaving uncertainty and concern among local residents as polling approaches.
