Tension escalated in Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur ahead of the Assembly elections after a BJP candidate alleged that his vehicle was attacked and fired upon late on Thursday night. Shankar Adhikari claimed that miscreants surrounded his car in the Suigachh area and opened fire, triggering panic and intensifying the political atmosphere in the region.
According to the allegation, the incident took place around 8:30 PM when the candidate was returning after visiting two injured party workers. His vehicle was reportedly blocked using a motorcycle in front and a four-wheeler from behind, following which vandalism began. Adhikari alleged that around five to seven rounds were fired targeting his car, and he narrowly escaped. Reports also indicate that two BJP workers sustained injuries during the incident.
However, the Trinamool Congress has strongly denied the allegations and filed a complaint, accusing BJP workers of initiating the violence. TMC leader Gopal Bhowmik claimed that their workers were present in the area when they were allegedly threatened by BJP members, who later returned and opened fire. Police officials have confirmed receiving a complaint and stated that bullets and firearms have been recovered as part of the investigation.
