A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings across coastal regions. Officials cautioned that waves as high as 3 metres could reach parts of Iwate Prefecture and Hokkaido, urging residents to move to higher ground without delay.
Authorities said tsunami waves were already approaching coastal areas and could strike multiple times. Residents were advised to stay away from coastlines and river mouths, with warnings that wave heights and arrival times could vary from initial forecasts.
Emergency services have been placed on high alert as officials continue to assess potential damage and monitor developments. People in affected regions have been asked to remain in safe locations until all warnings are officially lifted.
