Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
With the first phase of polling in West Bengal scheduled for April 23, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has made a strong claim about the party’s prospects in the state. Addressing a rally in Birbhum, he said, “I may not be able to specify the exact number of seats, but I can firmly say that the Bharatiya Janata Party is coming to power in Bengal with a huge mandate. BJP will secure a two-thirds majority in the state.”
His remarks come at a crucial stage of campaigning, with political parties making final appeals to voters ahead of polling. Singh’s statement adds to a series of similar claims by top BJP leaders, including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, who have repeatedly asserted that the party is set to form the next government in West Bengal. State leaders such as Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu Adhikari have also echoed this confidence.
During his speech, Singh sharply criticised the All India Trinamool Congress government, questioning its performance over the past decade and a half. He said, “The people of West Bengal have given Trinamool Congress three consecutive terms. In my view, 15 years is more than enough time for development. There are many states in our country that have progressed rapidly within just 5 to 8 years. At one time, West Bengal contributed 10% to the country’s economy. But after Trinamool came to power, that share has dropped to 5%.” He further alleged that the state is facing an atmosphere of fear and violence and urged voters to opt for change.
Addressing women voters, Singh said, “I want to assure the mothers and sisters here—please strengthen BJP. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to providing 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. Sooner or later, this will become a reality.” He also referred to Operation Sindoor, calling it a major achievement and congratulating the country’s armed forces for its success.
