Campaign turns violent in South 24 Pgs as ISF candidate Arabul Islam’s car attacked, protest blocks highway

An ISF candidate, Arabul Islam, was allegedly attacked while campaigning in the Canning East Assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas, triggering fresh political tension ahead of the elections. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Deuli near Minakhan, where miscreants reportedly vandalised his vehicle, smashing its windows while he was inside. The sudden attack has heightened concerns over law and order in politically sensitive areas as polling approaches.

According to allegations, a group armed with bamboo sticks and rods targeted the vehicle and assaulted party workers accompanying the candidate. Despite the violence, ISF workers managed to shield Arabul Islam and move him to a safe location. Visuals from the scene reportedly show extensive damage to the vehicle, with locals, including women, seen participating in the attack. Tensions escalated rapidly, prompting police intervention, including a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

Following the incident, ISF supporters staged a blockade on the Basanti Highway at Ghatakpukur crossing, demanding immediate arrest of those responsible. Arabul Islam, who was present at the protest along with his son, alleged a deliberate attempt on his life, claiming that armed attackers, including individuals carrying swords, were involved. He further stated that candidates are not allowed to campaign freely in the area and are routinely targeted.

Meanwhile, political reactions intensified, with allegations and counter-allegations surfacing. ISF accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the attack, while outgoing MLA Shaukat Molla dismissed the claims and criticised Arabul Islam, calling the incident condemnable but questioning his conduct. The clash has once again underscored the volatile atmosphere in parts of South 24 Parganas ahead of the polls.
