EC jumps into action after multiple violence reports, several miscreants arrested from Lavpur, Kumarganj and Naoda

The Election Commission of India has taken immediate and decisive action following reports of sporadic violence in Lavpur, Kumarganj, and Naoda during the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on Thursday. Utilizing webcasting and ground-level footage, authorities have identified and detained several individuals involved in the clashes. The Commission has confirmed that the situation in these sensitive areas is currently peaceful, and detailed reports have been submitted to the state headquarters regarding the corrective measures taken to restore order.

A significant point of concern was the violent incident at Booth Number 68 under the Sainthia Police Station in Lavpur. Reports indicate that a BJP candidate and his son were severely beaten, resulting in head injuries. Allegations of gross inactivity by local security personnel during the assault have prompted a formal inquiry, with the Commission reviewing surveillance footage to ensure that all perpetrators identified in the video are brought to justice. As per reports, 5 people have been arrested in Kumarganj while 2 have been detained in Naoda.

In a parallel move to maintain electoral integrity, the EC has issued a formal show-cause notice to Mallay Kumar Dhar, a Sector Officer in Siuri. Dhar has been accused of political bias and of attempting to influence other polling officials during the conduct of the election. The Commission has signaled a zero-tolerance policy toward administrative partiality, noting that if Dhar’s explanation is found unsatisfactory, he will face immediate suspension from his duties.
