EC suspends Hingalganj OC over 'bias' allegations ahead of Phase 2 voting

The Election Commission of India has suspended the Officer-in-Charge of Hingalganj police station ahead of the second phase of the Assembly elections, citing serious allegations including an alleged nexus with miscreants and political bias. The officer, Sandeep Sarkar, has been directed to relinquish his duties by 11 am on Friday and will remain under suspension until further orders, according to an official notification issued late Thursday night.

The action comes after multiple complaints were submitted to the Commission against Sarkar, accusing him of maintaining links with local criminal groups and failing to act impartially during the election period. A detailed report outlining these allegations was submitted on April 21, following which the Commission reviewed the matter and decided to initiate disciplinary action on April 23.

As part of the directive, Sarkar has also been asked to suggest a replacement officer to take over responsibilities at the police station. The Commission’s intervention comes in the backdrop of heightened sensitivity in the region, with concerns over maintaining law and order ahead of the crucial second phase of polling scheduled for April 29, which will cover the remaining Assembly constituencies.

Hingalganj is considered a politically sensitive constituency, witnessing a closely contested battle between major parties. Its proximity to the international border has further intensified security arrangements, prompting authorities to act swiftly to prevent any escalation of tension and ensure free and fair elections in the area.
