Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
Cooch Behar emerged as the top-performing district in the country during the first phase of the Assembly elections, recording an unprecedented voter turnout of 96.04 percent. Polling was conducted across 152 constituencies in 16 districts, but it was the so-called ‘Royal District’ that drew national attention with its record-breaking participation, marking one of the highest turnout figures in India’s electoral history.
According to initial figures shared by district authorities, the turnout crossed previous benchmarks, making it a historic milestone. Officials indicated that such a high percentage had not been recorded earlier in the district, reinforcing its reputation for strong electoral participation. From early morning, long queues were visible across polling booths, with voters from all age groups, including senior citizens and first-time voters, turning up in large numbers.
Several factors are believed to have contributed to the surge in turnout. Analysts point to favourable weather conditions and robust security arrangements, including the presence of central forces, which ensured that voters could cast their ballots without fear. The ongoing Special Intensive Revision process is also seen as influencing voter behaviour, with concerns among some sections about future electoral inclusion encouraging higher participation.
Administrative efforts, including extensive awareness campaigns under voter outreach initiatives and booth-level mobilisation, also played a significant role in boosting turnout. Social organisations and local initiatives further supported these efforts by encouraging participation across communities. With the first phase concluding on a high note, attention now shifts to the second phase scheduled for April 29, as stakeholders assess the implications of such a massive voter response.
