Delhi Capitals received a major relief after pacer Lungi Ngidi was discharged from hospital following a head injury sustained during an IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings at Arun Jaitley Stadium. The South African fast bowler had been taken to hospital after a heavy fall on the back of his head and neck while attempting a catch during the game.
The incident occurred in the third over of Punjab Kings’ innings when Ngidi tried to complete a catch off a lofted shot by Priyansh Arya. While back-pedalling, he lost balance and landed awkwardly, hitting his head on the ground. The impact forced a halt in play for over 10 minutes as medical staff attended to him before he was stretchered off and taken for further treatment.
Ngidi was later admitted to BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, where he was kept under observation. Officials confirmed that he remained stable and was discharged after medical evaluation, easing concerns among teammates and fans. Delhi Capitals co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi also visited the hospital to check on the player’s condition.
The injury proved costly for Delhi Capitals during the match, as they struggled in the absence of one of their key bowlers. Despite posting a massive total of 264/2, powered by a record-breaking 152 not out by KL Rahul, the team failed to defend the score. Punjab Kings completed a historic chase, led by strong performances from Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, and captain Shreyas Iyer.
Ngidi has been an important part of Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack this season, picking up seven wickets in seven matches. Team officials expressed optimism about his recovery while also acknowledging fielding lapses, including multiple dropped catches, as a key factor behind the defeat. The team is expected to monitor his fitness closely ahead of upcoming fixtures.
