Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
The Centre on Tuesday ruled out any immediate increase in petrol and diesel prices after the conclusion of polling on April 29, dismissing widespread speculation triggered by rising global crude oil rates. The clarification comes amid reports of panic buying and long queues at fuel stations in several states.
Officials said there is “no proposal” to revise fuel prices and urged the public not to rely on rumours. Authorities have been monitoring retail outlets closely and coordinating with state governments to ensure uninterrupted supply and prevent shortages.
The assurance comes even as global crude prices have surged sharply in recent weeks, putting financial pressure on fuel retailers who are reportedly incurring heavy losses. Despite this, the government maintained that adequate stocks of petrol, diesel and LPG are available across the country.
Retail fuel prices have remained unchanged since April 2022, even as international rates fluctuated significantly. The government’s stance aims to maintain price stability and prevent disruption in supply during a sensitive electoral period.
