“TMC leaders in touch with BJP out of fear of defeat”: Adhir claims, TMC calls remark “baseless”

A fresh political controversy erupted in West Bengal ahead of the second phase of Assembly elections after senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that several Trinamool Congress leaders are secretly in touch with the BJP, fearing electoral defeat. Speaking in Baharampur, Chowdhury claimed that a section of the ruling party has already begun exploring options to secure their political future.

He alleged that multiple senior leaders within the Trinamool Congress have accepted the possibility of losing the election and are coordinating with BJP leadership behind the scenes. According to him, these leaders are waiting for polling to conclude before making any formal move, suggesting that quiet negotiations are already underway in districts like Baharampur and surrounding areas.

Chowdhury further described the situation within the ruling party as a “stampede-like” crisis, claiming that leaders who once projected confidence are now focused on survival. He also alleged that attempts to align with the BJP are being driven by a desire to avoid potential investigations and retain political influence, indicating growing uncertainty within the party ranks.

The remarks have intensified political debate, particularly in the backdrop of earlier concerns raised about possible “horse-trading” in the state. Chowdhury’s claims have added another layer of tension to an already high-stakes electoral contest, just hours before voting begins in key constituencies.

The Trinamool Congress strongly rejected the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. Party leader Apurba Sarkar said the remarks reflect frustration and accused Chowdhury of acting in favour of the BJP. He asserted that the party remains united and confident, dismissing any suggestion of defections as an attempt to mislead voters ahead of polling.
