Nepal Airlines has issued a public apology after a network map shared on its social media platforms incorrectly depicted Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan, triggering widespread backlash. The state-owned carrier acknowledged the error, describing it as a “cartographic inaccuracy” and clarified that the depiction does not reflect the official stance of Nepal or the airline.
The controversy erupted after the airline posted a route map that showed the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, within Pakistan’s territory. The image quickly went viral, drawing strong reactions and criticism from users, particularly in India, who raised concerns over the incorrect representation of international boundaries.
Following the backlash, the airline deleted the post and issued a statement expressing regret over the mistake. It stated that immediate steps were taken to remove the content and that an internal review has been initiated to ensure that all future materials meet the highest standards of accuracy and sensitivity.
The airline also emphasised that it values its relationships with neighbouring countries and expressed regret for any offence caused by the post. The incident comes at a time when the carrier is looking to expand its operations, including increasing flight frequency on key international routes.
The episode highlights the sensitivity surrounding cartographic representations in the region, with authorities and organisations expected to maintain accuracy in depicting international boundaries, especially in official or public communications.
