No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Amid political controversy over the death of an elderly voter in Udaynarayanpur of Howrah district, the Chief Electoral Officer has issued a clarification rejecting allegations of misconduct by central forces. Claims circulating that the voter died after being pushed have been dismissed as baseless.
According to the Election Commission, 82-year-old Purna Chandra Dolui from Penro had come to vote at booth number 245 with his son. He successfully cast his vote, with his son allowed to assist him at the EVM. Shortly after voting, he collapsed near the compartment due to age-related illness and extreme heat.
He was immediately taken to Amta Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The Commission cited the General Observer’s report, stating that his son was present and confirmed there was no pushing or scuffle involving security personnel.
The CEO expressed grief over the incident and urged political parties and the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims. Emphasising the need for responsible conduct, the Commission stated that such allegations harm the dignity of personnel on duty and appealed for respect towards the deceased and his family.
