Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress over the law-and-order situation in West Bengal during his regular morning walk at Eco Park in Kolkata. Referring to the murder of Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath in Madhyamgram and recent incidents of violence across the state, Ghosh alleged that the administration had failed to control the situation. He stated that public anger was surfacing after years of political oppression and said the BJP would work to end the culture of violence and firearms in the state.
Reacting to the murder of Chandranath Rath, Ghosh said those speaking about violence were not taking effective steps to stop it. He stated that the BJP was winning elections across the country without engaging in violence or looting. Criticising the Chief Minister, he said the “Police Minister” was focused on “doing drama” instead of ensuring public safety. He further alleged that individuals encouraged through political patronage had now become a burden on society and claimed that the state government was avoiding responsibility for maintaining law and order.
Commenting on the murder in Entally, Dilip Ghosh alleged that anti-social elements were operating within the Trinamool Congress and described the incident as the result of internal conflict within the party. According to him, disputes had emerged between groups over distribution of benefits and influence. He also denied any BJP involvement in incidents of looting or forcible occupation of offices and said police should take strict action against those responsible for such activities.
Addressing incidents of firing and violence reported from Basirhat and other areas, Ghosh said maintaining law and order until the formation of a new government remained the responsibility of the Election Commission and the police. He also warned party leaders against inducting anti-social elements into the BJP and stated that strict monitoring was being maintained within the organisation. Ghosh claimed that police personnel now had the freedom to act against criminals and warned that the situation could worsen if immediate action was not taken against those involved in violence.
