BJP likely to name Suvendu Adhikari as Bengal CM, two deputy CMs under discussion

Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the leading contender for the post of Chief Minister as the Bharatiya Janata Party prepares to form its first government in West Bengal following its Assembly election victory. Party sources indicated that discussions are also underway regarding the appointment of two Deputy Chief Ministers as part of the new administrative structure in the state.

A crucial meeting of the BJP’s newly elected MLAs is scheduled to take place later in the day, during which the leader of the legislative party is expected to be formally elected. The decision is likely to determine the Chief Ministerial candidate ahead of the swearing-in ceremony scheduled at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Sources indicated that senior party leaders are holding consultations regarding the final composition of the cabinet.

According to party discussions, one of the Deputy Chief Minister posts may be assigned to a woman leader. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, who won from Asansol Dakshin, is being considered among the prominent names for the role. Discussions are also underway regarding representation from North Bengal in the leadership structure, with leaders from the region reportedly being considered for the second Deputy Chief Minister post.

Speculation has also continued over possible representation from tribal communities in the new government. BJP leaders are reportedly examining different combinations aimed at ensuring regional and social balance within the cabinet. West Bengal has not had a Deputy Chief Minister for nearly two decades, with late CPI(M) leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee being among the last to hold the position during the Jyoti Basu government.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata earlier in the day and held meetings with senior BJP leaders and elected MLAs. Separate discussions were also reportedly held with several leaders whose names are being considered for important positions in the new government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata.
