Interstate links emerge in Chandranath Rath murder, Police reaches Uttar Pradesh

The investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath, personal secretary to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has intensified with investigators now probing a suspected interstate network linked to the killing. A Special Investigation Team of the West Bengal Police has reportedly reached Uttar Pradesh as part of the investigation, while inquiries are already underway in Bihar and Assam. Border police stations in Uttar Pradesh have also reportedly been placed on alert in connection with the case.

According to investigators, the number plate used on the car that allegedly intercepted Rath’s vehicle was registered in the name of James Williams of Siliguri. Police found that Williams had earlier advertised his Nissan Micra car for sale, following which some individuals from Uttar Pradesh had contacted him regarding its purchase. Police teams have now reached Uttar Pradesh to question those individuals as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators suspect that two sharp shooters were involved in the murder. Police have also recovered a second motorcycle allegedly used in the crime from Barasat in North 24 Parganas district. CCTV footage collected during the investigation reportedly showed the movement of a red-colored car, which investigators believe may have been used by the attackers to flee after the shooting.

Chandranath Rath was shot dead in Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district late on the night of May 6. According to police sources, motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted his vehicle and opened fire at close range. Rath died on the spot, while his driver sustained injuries in the attack. Investigators are currently examining multiple pieces of forensic and electronic evidence collected from the crime scene and nearby areas.

Investigators are also examining claims that a contract worth approximately ₹30–40 lakh was allegedly given for the killing and that the shooters may have been brought from Bihar. Police sources stated that the investigation is currently focused on identifying the full interstate network behind the murder, tracing the movement of suspects across states, and analysing the CCTV footage showing the suspected escape route of the red-colored vehicle.
