Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta arrived in Kolkata on Saturday to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari as the first Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister of West Bengal. After visiting the Kalighat Kali Temple, Gupta said the mandate in Bengal marked the beginning of a new phase under BJP rule and stated that the dream of “Sonar Bangla” would be fulfilled.
Speaking to reporters, Rekha Gupta thanked the people of West Bengal, especially women voters, for supporting the BJP in large numbers. She said the election result reflected people’s desire for development and change in the state. Gupta also stated that Bengal had witnessed 15 years of “atrocities” and claimed that development and public faith would now strengthen under the new government led by Suvendu Adhikari.
Suvendu Adhikari was elected leader of the BJP Legislative Party on Friday during a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata. Following the announcement, Adhikari met Governor R. N. Ravi and staked claim to form the government. Several senior BJP leaders and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states arrived in Kolkata to attend the swearing-in ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground. Adhikari won both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur Assembly constituencies in the 2026 elections and defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
