Humayun Kabir announces 'unofficial support' for BJP, to contest only 6 Bengal LS seats in 2029

As the BJP formally assumed power in West Bengal with Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as Chief Minister on Saturday, senior leader Humayun Kabir triggered fresh political discussion by indicating possible unofficial support for the BJP in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. His statement came amid the political transition in the state and immediately drew attention across Bengal’s political circles.

Humayun Kabir announced that his party, the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, would extend “unofficial support” to the BJP on most Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal during the 2029 parliamentary elections. He stated that his party would contest only six constituencies, including three seats in Murshidabad, two in Malda, and one in Raiganj, while remaining away from the rest of the constituencies in the state.

Directly targeting the All India Trinamool Congress, Humayun Kabir claimed that his party would secure victories in all three Murshidabad seats it plans to contest. He said he would personally contest from Berhampore, while candidates from his party would also contest in Jangipur and other regions of the district. His statement indicated a future political strategy focused increasingly against the Trinamool Congress.

Humayun Kabir, who was previously associated with the Trinamool Congress, recently demonstrated his political strength in the Assembly elections by winning from both Naoda and Rejinagar constituencies. Due to constitutional provisions, he will now have to vacate one of the two Assembly seats. He announced that he would retain Naoda and vacate Rejinagar for a by-election.

The leader further stated that his son, Ghulam Nabi Azad, would be fielded as the candidate from Rejinagar in the upcoming by-election. Humayun Kabir’s remarks, made on the day of the BJP government’s swearing-in ceremony in Bengal, have intensified discussions regarding possible political realignments and emerging equations ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections in the state.
