Himanta Biswa Sarma to take oath on May 12 as Assam's CM; Modi-Shah will attend

In a significant political development following the 2026 assembly elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously re-elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party during a meeting in Guwahati on Sunday. The meeting, conducted in the presence of central observers J.P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, paves the way for Sarma to serve his second consecutive term as the Chief Minister of Assam. This election cements his leadership after steering the party to a record-breaking victory where the BJP secured 82 seats on its own, surpassing the majority mark without relying on allies for the first time.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a historic hat-trick in the state, winning a total of 102 seats in the 126-member assembly. While the BJP took the lion's share with 82 seats, its regional partners—the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF)—secured 10 seats each. In contrast, the opposition alliance led by the Indian National Congress (INC) faced a severe setback, managing only 19 seats, marking one of its poorest performances in the state.

Preparations are now in full swing for a grand swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara, Guwahati. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia described the upcoming event as a "historic moment," confirming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend as the chief guest. The ceremony is expected to host a massive gathering of over one lakh people, along with several Union Ministers and Chief Ministers from other BJP-ruled states.
