A 64-year-old woman was killed after a roadside wall collapsed when a six-wheeler truck crashed into it in the Belur area of Howrah early Monday morning. The incident took place on Ramlochan Saha Road under Belur police station limits and was captured on a CCTV camera installed in the locality. The deceased was identified as Lalmoni Mishra.
According to local sources, the incident occurred at around 5 am when the elderly woman had stepped out of her house to pluck flowers. At that time, the driver of a six-wheeler truck allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to ram into a roadside wall. The impact led to the immediate collapse of the wall, trapping the woman beneath the debris. She died on the spot due to the injuries sustained in the incident.
Hearing the loud noise, local residents rushed to the area and rescued the woman from under the rubble in an injured and bloodied condition. She was taken to T.L. Jaiswal Hospital in Belur, where doctors declared her dead. Police from Belur police station later reached the spot after receiving information about the accident.
Police have started an investigation into the incident based on the CCTV footage recovered from the area. The truck involved in the accident has been seized, while the driver has been absconding since the incident. A search operation has been launched to trace him. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect overspeeding may have caused the accident, though other possible factors are also being examined.
