Nirbhaya re-run in Delhi, woman gang-raped in moving bus for hours

The Delhi Police have arrested a bus driver and a conductor for the alleged gang-rape of a 30-year-old woman inside a stationary sleeper bus. The incident occurred on the night of Monday, May 11, in the Rani Bagh area of North Delhi. Following the survivor's complaint and a subsequent medical examination, authorities registered a First Information Report (FIR) and seized the vehicle allegedly used in the commission of the crime.

According to the victim's account, the assault took place while she was walking home from her workplace, a factory in Mangolpuri. The survivor, a resident of a slum cluster in Pitampura and a mother of three, reportedly approached a man standing at the door of a sleeper bus at a Saraswati Vihar bus stop to ask for the time. She alleged that she was then forced into the vehicle, which was subsequently driven toward Nangloi where the sexual assault occurred.

The Delhi Police confirmed that both accused individuals are currently in custody as the probe continues to examine all possible angles. Official statements indicate that the vehicle was a sleeper bus and the crime was committed during the late hours of Monday. The victim's medical report served as the basis for the immediate legal proceedings and the subsequent arrests made on Thursday.

The incident has triggered sharp political reactions in the national capital regarding the safety of women. Members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have publicly criticized the central government, comparing the nature of the crime to the 2012 Nirbhaya case. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj issued statements on social media expressing concern over the collapse of security for women in public transport and schools.

The investigation into the gang-rape remains active as police gather further evidence and documentation regarding the accused. While the driver and conductor are behind bars, officials are maintaining a strict focus on the procedural requirements of the case. The vehicle remains in police possession as a key piece of physical evidence while the survivor receives necessary support following the formal registration of the case.
