Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
In a significant departure from long-standing parliamentary traditions, Rathindranath Bose was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Friday, May 15, 2026. A first-time MLA from the Cooch Behar Dakshin constituency and a chartered accountant by profession, Bose's elevation marks the first time a representative from North Bengal has held the prestigious post. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari proposed his name, which was seconded by Minister Agnimitra Paul and supported by the opposition, leading to his unanimous selection by voice vote.
Following the election, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a historic decision to broadcast the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly live. Adhikari stated that this transparency would allow the public to witness the working methods of the government and the conduct of their elected representatives firsthand. He emphasized that important sessions, including the state budget, will be televised to ensure accountability and to keep the citizens informed about the performance of both the ruling party and the opposition.
The Chief Minister’s speech also carried a clear warning and a plea for decorum, referencing past instances of violence and long-term suspensions within the House. Adhikari stressed that the Assembly should not be a "place for fighting" and assured that despite their smaller numbers, the opposition would be granted ample time to voice their concerns. He contrasted this new approach with previous years, vowing that no opposition leader would be "bloodied" or excluded from the House without just cause, signaling a shift toward more inclusive democratic practices under the new BJP government.
Rathindra Bose succeeds Biman Banerjee, who served as Speaker for 15 years under the Trinamool Congress administration. In his maiden address from the chair, Bose expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to discharge his duties with the motto of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas". Pro-tem Speaker Tapas Roy formally welcomed Bose to the seat, as the 18th Assembly begins its term with a renewed focus on transparency and parliamentary discipline.
