Bengal budget session will start from June 18; Budget to be tabled on 22nd

The first full-scale budget session of the newly formed BJP government in West Bengal is set to commence on June 18, 2026. Speaker Rathindra Bose confirmed that the highly anticipated state budget will be formally presented on June 22. This session is critical as it follows the "Vote on Account" presented by the previous administration in February, which remains valid for only four months. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, addressing the Assembly on Friday, invited the opposition to engage in rigorous yet constructive debate, signaling a shift toward parliamentary discipline.

Nabanna has already issued directives to all government departments to begin rigorous budget preparations. Unlike previous years, the new administration aims to align state income closely with expenditure to rein in rising debt. Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal has reportedly held high-level meetings with Finance Department officials to prioritize the creation of permanent state assets. A key focus will be a massive boost to the infrastructure sector, which the current leadership believes was underfunded in previous budget cycles.

Internal reviews by top officials have revealed dissatisfaction with the previous allocation of only ₹41,000 crore for infrastructure within a ₹4 lakh crore budget. The upcoming full budget is expected to significantly increase this figure, aiming to spark economic growth through capital projects. Furthermore, every department has been strictly instructed to eliminate financial wastage and implement administrative reforms. This fiscal strategy is intended to reflect the "outline of the new government’s projects" and fulfill major electoral promises.
