A BJP leader was critically injured after being allegedly attacked by a group of men in the Narendrapur area late on Tuesday night, triggering tension in the locality. The injured leader, identified as 48-year-old Pappu Sana, was first taken to a local hospital and later shifted to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where he is currently admitted in the ICU. Police have started an investigation into the incident.
According to police and local sources, the attack took place near the Sanskriti Art Gallery in the Kheyadah Gram Panchayat area under Narendrapur police station limits. Allegations claim that several youths arrived in a vehicle from East Jadavpur and, along with some local individuals, surrounded Pappu Sana before assaulting him with bamboo sticks and other objects. The attackers allegedly fled the area immediately after the incident.
Police officials said CCTV footage from a nearby shop and surrounding areas has been collected as part of the investigation. Security and police surveillance in the locality have also been increased following the incident amid rising political tension. Investigators are examining the footage and questioning local residents regarding the movements of the accused persons before and after the attack.
Reacting to the incident, BJP leader Debashis Dhar alleged political involvement behind the assault and claimed party workers had shown restraint despite repeated provocation. He said a formal complaint had already been lodged at Narendrapur Police Station and that the party would pursue legal action in the matter. The All India Trinamool Congress has denied allegations of involvement in the attack, although no official statement has been issued by the party leadership.
