Tension spread across Basirhat in North 24 Parganas after two live bombs and a threatening note were found outside the house of BJP booth president Anil Baran Mallik in Shashina village under Basirhat police station limits. Police and central forces reached the spot on Thursday morning and recovered the explosives following information from local residents.
According to local and police sources, unidentified miscreants allegedly left the bombs outside the entrance of the BJP leader’s house during the night. When the family opened the door on Thursday morning, they found two crude bombs lying outside. Three bottles tied with ropes were also reportedly hanging from the grill of the verandah. A handwritten note reading “In the bhog of Maa” was recovered from the spot.
Anil Baran Mallik, BJP booth president of Booth No. 105, claimed he had been associated with the party for nearly 20 years and had never faced such threats earlier. He alleged that a similar symbolic threat involving a bottle tied with rope had been left outside his residence on April 2. While refraining from directly naming anyone, he alleged that the Trinamool Congress could be behind the incident because of political rivalry after the Assembly elections.
Police from Basirhat police station, along with central force personnel deployed in the area, recovered and later defused the bombs. Security has been tightened in the locality and route marches are being conducted to maintain order. Investigators have started questioning local residents and examining how the explosives reached the area. Police said a case has been registered based on a written complaint and the investigation is ongoing.
