Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
Howrah City Police on Sunday publicly paraded alleged criminal Akash Singh through several areas of North Howrah during an investigation linked to past criminal cases against him. Singh, whose head had been shaved, was seen walking beside police personnel wearing an undershirt and underwear as officers conducted what police sources described as a reconstruction of earlier crime-related incidents in the locality.
According to police records, Akash Singh has been accused in more than 20 criminal cases, including allegations related to bomb attacks, violent crimes and attacks on police personnel. His name had also surfaced in connection with a 2021 firing incident in which gunshots were allegedly directed at police officers. Police arrested him earlier this month as part of ongoing operations against alleged criminal activities in the region.
During Sunday’s operation, police reportedly took Singh through several lanes and areas of North Howrah connected to previous investigations. Large crowds gathered along the route as residents watched the police movement. Witnesses stated that the accused walked silently with his head lowered while officers escorted him through the locality where he had allegedly operated for several years.
According to reports, police action against alleged organised crime has intensified in different parts of the state following recent administrative changes. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had earlier warned that attacks on police personnel would not be tolerated and instructed law enforcement agencies to take strict action against criminal networks and corruption. BJP leader Anupam Bhattacharya also reportedly shared details of the police action on social media.
