The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has granted a 10-day extension to Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee to respond to notices concerning 17 properties owned by him. This development comes after the original deadline for the reply was set to expire at midnight on Monday. The notices specifically question whether proper permissions were obtained from the civic body for additional constructions at his residences.
The move follows a formal request from Abhishek Banerjee’s legal counsel, who sent a letter to the KMC on Sunday seeking more time to formulate a response. The civic body had recently intensified its scrutiny, even posting a physical notice on the wall of his Harish Mukherjee Road residence in the Bhabanipur area of South Kolkata. By granting the extension, the KMC authorities have allowed the lawmaker a brief window to consolidate his documentation and address the queries regarding the structural changes.
Abhishek Banerjee finds himself under the scanner as the municipality examines the legality of construction across his various holdings. The inquiry by the KMC focuses on the adherence to building bylaws and the verification of sanctioned plans. With the new deadline in place, the TMC leader now has until late next week to submit a detailed explanation to the municipal authorities.
