Five labourers were killed after soil collapsed on them while they were digging a well under the MNREGA scheme in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna district on Tuesday. The incident took place around 12 pm in Biharpurwa village under the Ajaygarh development block, police officials said. The workers were engaged in the construction of a public irrigation well when the soil suddenly caved in.
According to police and administrative officials, the labourers became trapped under the collapsed soil during the excavation work. Rescue operations were immediately launched after local authorities received information about the incident. Officials later recovered all five bodies from the site and sent them for post-mortem examination.
The deceased were identified as Ashish Yadav, Rajkumar Yadav, Rampal Yadav, Chunnu Yadav and Chunvad Pal. The well construction work was reportedly being carried out under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in the village under Gram Panchayat Beherpurwa in the Ajaygarh block area.
District Collector Usha Parmar reached the site after the incident and reviewed the rescue operation. She also met the families of the deceased workers and assured them that the administration would provide possible assistance. Police and district officials continued examining the circumstances surrounding the soil collapse.
Bharatiya Janata Party MP Vishnu Dutt Sharma described the incident as tragic and stated that the administration was extending assistance to the affected families. He said he had spoken with the district administration and senior officials regarding the matter. Authorities are continuing further inquiries into the incident.
