Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
Police arrested INTTUC leader Nasir Sheikh in the Falta Special Economic Zone area of South 24 Parganas following protests by factory workers over allegations of extortion and intimidation in the industrial belt. Nasir Sheikh, who is known to be a close aide of Jahangir Khan, was taken into custody after workers allegedly confronted him inside the industrial zone on Monday.
According to local and police sources, Nasir Sheikh and his associates had allegedly maintained influence over multiple factories operating in the Falta Special Economic Zone for an extended period. Allegations against him include forcibly deducting money from workers’ salaries, collecting money through coercion and intimidating factory owners. Investigators are also examining allegations that some companies reduced or shut operations due to continued pressure and alleged extortion activities.
Workers and factory authorities reportedly avoided filing complaints earlier because of fear regarding his alleged influence in the area. According to investigators, tensions escalated after a group of factory workers spotted Nasir Sheikh inside the industrial zone and confronted him over long-standing allegations of harassment and forced collections from workers.
As the situation intensified, police from Falta police station reached the area with a large force and intervened to control the crowd. Officers removed Nasir Sheikh from the spot and later arrested him based on specific allegations related to extortion, intimidation and coercion. Police said several non-bailable charges have been filed against him in connection with the case.
Investigators have also started searching for other alleged members associated with the network. The arrest triggered discussion across the Falta industrial belt, where workers and factory-linked individuals reacted strongly to the police action. Authorities are continuing further investigation into the allegations and related activities within the industrial zone.
