The West Bengal government has decided to add 100 new beds to Kolkata's PG Hospital (IPGMER) in an effort to address the persistent shortage of beds and the heavy patient load at one of the state's largest healthcare institutions. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to formally inaugurate the expansion on May 30. According to hospital data, the Outpatient Department (OPD) of PG Hospital receives between 12,000 and 15,000 patients daily, resulting in sustained pressure on inpatient facilities. The addition of 100 beds will increase the hospital's overall bed strength from 3,200 to 3,300, including capacity across its affiliated institutions.
At present, the hospital network comprises the main PG Hospital campus along with Bangur Hospital, the Institute of Psychiatry, Sambhunath Pandit Hospital, Kolkata Police Hospital, Ramrik Haralalka Hospital, and Khidirpur Maternity Home. Health Department sources stated that the Chief Minister will also inaugurate a cervical cancer vaccination programme at Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital on May 30, during which the expansion of bed capacity at PG Hospital is expected to be formally announced. The increase is aimed at strengthening patient care infrastructure and accommodating a larger number of patients requiring treatment.
According to the hospital administration, 25 new beds have been added to the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Woodburn Ward. Another 50 beds have been added to the Emergency Observation Ward at Sambhunath Pandit Hospital, increasing its capacity from 75 to 125 beds for emergency and critical care patients. In addition, 25 new beds have been allocated to Kolkata Police Hospital in Bhowanipore, where patients transferred after initial stabilization at Sambhunath Pandit Hospital will receive further treatment and recovery care.
