The impact of the Trinamool Congress's defeat in the Assembly elections has now reached the Chandannagar Municipal Corporation, where 30 councilors of the party resigned from their posts on Friday. The development follows the defeat of Trinamool candidate Indranil Sen in the Chandannagar Assembly constituency. In the 33-member corporation, Trinamool previously held 31 seats, while the remaining two seats were represented by the CPI(M). Among those who resigned is outgoing Mayor Ram Chakraborty.
According to information available, five Trinamool councilors submitted their resignations on Friday morning, while another 25 councilors tendered their resignation letters later in the day. The resignation letters were submitted to Corporation Chairperson Snigdha Roy. The councilors also forwarded copies of their resignations to the Municipal Commissioner through email, resulting in a major change in the composition of the civic body.
Outgoing Mayor Ram Chakraborty stated that the party accepts the mandate delivered by the electorate in the Assembly elections. He said that despite the electoral setback, the councilors had intended to continue providing municipal services. He further stated that the Urban Development Department subsequently issued a directive for an audit of the corporation's expenditures, a development that coincided with the resignations submitted by the councilors.
