"Kolkata to get Water Metro connectivity," says Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor Biswajit Mondal has been arrested following allegations of molestation, assault, verbal abuse and criminal intimidation made by a woman. Mondal, the elected councillor of Ward No. 114, was arrested by officers of Regent Park Police Station after a complaint was lodged against him.
According to the complainant, the first alleged incident took place on March 6, 2024, near Gangapuri School, where she claimed that Mondal assaulted and molested her. She further alleged that on May 9, 2026, he verbally abused her using obscene language and issued threats. Following these allegations, she filed a formal complaint with Regent Park Police Station on June 1.
Police subsequently initiated an investigation and arrested Mondal based on the complaint. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the evidence collected or the specific sections under which the case has been registered. The investigation remains ongoing.
Mondal is a three-time councillor who was elected from Ward No. 114 in 2010, 2015 and 2021. The ward was previously part of the Jadavpur Assembly constituency before constituency delimitation brought it under the Tollygunge Assembly constituency. He is also known as a close associate of former state minister Arup Biswas.
The arrest comes amid a series of police investigations involving elected representatives of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. In recent weeks, several councillors have faced legal action in separate cases involving allegations such as extortion, criminal intimidation and other offences. Police have not yet released additional information regarding the case against Biswajit Mondal.
