Humayun Kabir becomes Mohammedan Sporting president as club battles ₹13 crore debt

Mohammedan Sporting Club has appointed Humayun Kabir as its new president following the resignation of former president Amiruddin Bobby. The leadership change comes as the club faces a financial crisis, with debts estimated at around ₹13 crore and preparations for the upcoming season affected by a shortage of funds. Humayun Kabir is scheduled to be formally welcomed at a felicitation programme at the club on Saturday.

Amiruddin Bobby stepped down on Friday after facing sustained demands for his resignation from a section of club members and supporters. Club sources indicated that while the president’s position has changed, the existing committees will remain in place for now. The club plans to review the new president’s efforts to improve its financial condition over the coming month before considering any further organisational changes.

The club has been dealing with financial difficulties for an extended period. Previous attempts to revive its finances through investments from Bunkerhill and later Shrachi Sports resulted in disputes among stakeholders, adding to the club’s problems. Financial constraints led to difficulties in paying player salaries, while complaints from foreign players and coaches resulted in FIFA sanctions and a transfer ban.

At the start of the 2025–26 season, Mohammedan Sporting cleared some outstanding dues and assembled a squad under coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo, but without foreign players. The team struggled throughout its second Indian Super League campaign, failed to register a win, finished at the bottom of the table and was relegated. The relegation came two years after the club had won the I-League title.

In recent weeks, club officials approached ISF MLA Nawsad Siddique and Humayun Kabir seeking assistance in securing financial support and attracting new sponsors. Nawsad Siddique had earlier stated that he was confident of bringing investors to the club, while Humayun Kabir pledged support in addressing its financial challenges. Club officials said he has now assumed leadership as efforts continue to stabilise finances and secure future investment.
