Ex-Bidhannagar Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta arrested late at night on extortion charges

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sabyasachi Dutta, was arrested by the Bidhannagar North Police Station late on Monday night. The arrest was executed following an First Information Report (FIR) formally lodged by a local businessman earlier that afternoon. Dutta, a high-profile political figure in the state, previously served as the Mayor of Bidhannagar Municipality and was the Trinamool MLA representing the Rajarhat-Newtown constituency, having most recently contested the 2026 assembly elections from the Barasat seat.

The official complaint against Dutta was brought forward by a businessman identified as Madhusudan Chakraborty. According to police sources, Chakraborty filed a detailed complaint at the Bidhannagar North Police Station on Monday afternoon, leveling serious charges against the politician. The businessman alleged that Dutta was involved in a massive financial extortion racket and accused him of illegally extracting one crore rupees from him back in February 2018. Along with the multi-crore extortion claim, the FIR also listed severe allegations of continuous mental harassment and life-threatening intimidation.

Acting swiftly on the businessman's formal complaint, a team of police officials initially detained the former MLA from his flat located in the Newtown area on Monday evening. He was subsequently brought to the local police station for further legal proceedings. Investigators then subjected Dutta to a marathon, multi-hour interrogation regarding the financial transaction claims. Senior police sources revealed that the leader was officially placed under arrest late at night after he repeatedly failed to provide clear or satisfactory answers during the intense questioning session.
