Kalyan Banerjee accuses CM Suvendu of 'vindictive politics' amid CID's search at TMC central office
Police have arrested two BJP leaders in separate cases involving allegations of extortion, assault, intimidation and other criminal offences, days after the party leadership reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against corruption and misconduct. The arrested individuals are Shubhajit Ghosh, vice-president of the BJP OBC Cell in the Arambagh organizational district, and BJP leader Chiranjit Halder from Canning. Both were taken into custody following complaints filed with local police.
According to allegations, Shubhajit Ghosh was involved in assault, extortion and the forcible locking of the residence of a local Trinamool Congress leader shortly after the election results were declared. Following a complaint lodged with police, officers arrested him from a local tea stall in the Goghat area. The case is currently under investigation.
After his arrest, Shubhajit Ghosh denied the allegations and claimed that the charges against him were fabricated. He stated that the complaint had been filed by Trinamool Congress members and asserted that his party would address the matter. He also said that his arrest demonstrated the functioning of the rule of law, despite maintaining that the allegations were false.
In a separate case, police arrested BJP leader Chiranjit Halder of Canning following allegations of illegal occupation of fisheries, extortion, intimidation and attempted murder. According to complaints filed with Canning Police Station, he allegedly began harassing local residents after the election results were announced. A complaint was submitted on Monday evening, after which police took him into custody and produced him before a court.
The arrests come amid repeated statements from BJP leaders regarding action against corruption and intimidation within the party. Party leaders have previously stated that complaints against members would be acted upon irrespective of position and that legal proceedings would determine the validity of the allegations. Several workers and leaders have also reportedly received show-cause notices in recent weeks as part of internal disciplinary measures.
