A long-standing dispute over a pond allegedly led to the murder of a fish trader in Tajpur Mithani village of the Bahru area under Jaynagar Police Station in South 24 Parganas district. The deceased has been identified as Dudhkumar Baidya (42). Family members have alleged that he was attacked and killed by his cousin, Nimai Baidya, following an ongoing conflict over ownership, fishing rights, and use of the pond.
According to family members and local residents, Dudhkumar Baidya and his uncle's son, Nimai Baidya, had been involved in a prolonged dispute over the pond for several years. The disagreement reportedly intensified on Sunday after another heated argument broke out between the two sides regarding fishing activities in the water body. Villagers claimed that the families had previously been involved in several quarrels and minor clashes over the same issue.
On Tuesday night, Dudhkumar Baidya was reportedly travelling by bicycle to his workplace when the incident took place. According to allegations made by the victim's family, Nimai Baidya was waiting for him on the route and stopped him before attacking him with a sharp weapon. Family members alleged that multiple blows were inflicted on the fish trader, causing fatal injuries. He died at the scene.
