Police arrest 8 people in Falta violence; Jahangir's wife on radar

The South 24 Parganas region of Falta witnessed severe political volatility on Tuesday as loyalists of local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan—popularly nicknamed "Pushpa"—engaged in violent clashes with state police and central paramilitary forces. The unrest erupted shortly after law enforcement officers paraded the arrested leader through the local neighborhood in ropes, a visual that deeply angered his grassroots supporters. In retaliation, a massive mobilization led by Khan's wife, Regina Bibi, attempted to lay siege to the local police station, demanding his immediate and unconditional release.

The situation rapidly deteriorated into a pitched battle, forcing the administration to deploy armed central forces alongside state anti-riot squads to reclaim administrative control. A viral video from the scene captured chaotic sequences of panicked protestors fleeing across fields, with several individuals diving into local ponds to escape a coordinated baton charge by security personnel. Law enforcement acted swiftly to prevent the station area from being completely overrun, utilizing tactical dispersal methods to break the dense blockade before the security perimeter could be breached.

Jahangir Khan had been a high-priority target for law enforcement due to an extensive rap sheet involving local extortion, business dacoity, and severe financial embezzlement connected to rural housing welfare schemes (Awas Yojana). Following a coordinated intelligence operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police tracked Khan down and arrested him from the high-security India-Nepal border zone in North Bengal. He is currently serving a designated term in police custody following a formal judicial magistrate order.

Following the containment of Tuesday's street violence, the local police department filed a comprehensive First Information Report (FIR) to initiate a full-scale criminal investigation into the rioting. Authorities have officially arrested eight individuals for their direct involvement in assaulting public servants and destruction of property, while Khan’s wife, Regina Bibi, has been prominently named in the primary chargesheet for orchestrating the illegal agitation. Security deployments remain active across Falta to suppress any further retaliatory political mobilization.
