While the high-profile convergence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and thousands of citizens on Kolkata’s Red Road captured the nation's attention, the true spirit of International Yoga Day 2026 was epitomized in the rural landscape of Purulia. Across West Bengal, people took to streets, open fields, and community centers to celebrate the global wellness event. However, it was a centenarian from a small village who left top administrative officials and local residents completely spellbound with his extraordinary physical agility and structural flexibility.
Balram Pramanik, a resident of Shirampur village in Purulia's Jaipur block, is well over a hundred years old according to his family. Accompanied by his grandson, Pramanik arrived at the district administration's main Yoga Day event and effortlessly performed alongside people a fraction of his age. Leaving onlookers stunned, the elderly man flawlessly demonstrated complex postures such as Mayurasana (Peacock Pose) and Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand), proving that age-defying fitness is attainable through dedicated lifestyle practices.
Local leaders and administrators, including Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, highly praised the centenarian, affectionately branding him a "100-year-old fresh young man" who has fully mastered the essence of yoga. Pramanik later revealed that his health routine is not just limited to yoga; he still cycles an impressive 20 kilometers every single day and performs specialized asanas at home each morning. His family and neighbors noted that his remarkable longevity and youthful stamina remain a major source of pride and deep curiosity throughout the entire district.
