Chingrighata flyover closed in phases as Orange Line Metro enters final construction stage
A garden house allegedly linked to Trinamool Congress youth leader Papai Ghosh was demolished on Saturday after the administration carried out a court-directed bulldozer operation in Berhampore, Murshidabad. The property, located near Sursuri Math in Syedabad under Ward No. 3 of the Berhampore Municipality, was alleged by local residents to have been constructed on encroached land. Papai Ghosh has reportedly been absconding. Following a petition filed by local residents, the court ruled in their favour, after which the administration demolished the structure.
Local residents alleged that the garden house served as a regular gathering place for Papai Ghosh's associates from morning until late at night. They claimed that alcohol consumption, meat feasts, and late-night parties frequently took place on the premises, creating fear among nearby residents. Some locals further alleged that people were summoned to the garden house to settle disputes or face intimidation. According to municipal sources, the land belonged to a resident of Howrah and had remained vacant for a long period. The Congress-led Berhampore Municipal Board had earlier developed a children's park on a portion of the land, while the remaining area stayed vacant. It was alleged that after the municipality came under Trinamool Congress control, Papai Ghosh occupied the remaining land using forged documents.
Champa Ghosh, mother of Papai Ghosh, said the family possessed documents relating to the property and claimed they had not been informed before the demolition. She also stated that she was unaware of her son's current whereabouts. BJP Berhampore organisational district president Malay Mahajan said the administration had begun acting against illegal land occupation in line with the government's commitment to enforcing the rule of law. The administration carried out the demolition following the court's direction, while the legal dispute over the ownership of the property remains part of the case record.
