Suvendu Govt extends suspension of Vineet Goyal, 2 other senior cops by 4 months in connection with RG Kar case

The West Bengal government has extended the suspension period of three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers by another four months as part of the reopened "RG Kar Files" investigation. The administrative action affects former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former DC Central Indira Mukherjee, and former DC North Abhishek Gupta. The decision follows a thorough review of their controversial administrative roles during the initial critical phases of the investigation into the tragic 2024 rape and murder case at R.G. Kar Medical College.

The severe crime, which occurred on August 8, 2024, involved a young post-graduate doctor who was raped and murdered inside a seminar hall during her night shift. Following the incident, the Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) subsequently took over the probe at the Calcutta High Court's direction. While the Sealdah Court ultimately convicted Roy and sentenced him to life imprisonment, the victim's parents remain deeply unsatisfied with the investigation, firmly maintaining that several other highly influential individuals involved in the conspiracy are still being shielded from justice.

Following Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's administrative directive to reopen the files, investigators are explicitly probing whether the previous Chief Minister or any specific state minister had issued direct orders via telephone or digital messages to cover up the crime scene. In tandem, a three-member CBI bench formed under orders from the Calcutta High Court is mapping the exact timeline from the night of the crime to the victim's final rites. The investigation has also intensified surrounding local political figures, including the interrogation of former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh and Panihati crematorium in-charge Bholanath Patra regarding the highly rushed nature of the victim's cremation.
