Kalighat-TMC can withdraw necessary funds through special officer, HC gives interim relief
The police have intensified their crackdown on the recent unrest in Baruipur, arresting 22 more individuals during an overnight operation. These fresh arrests follow allegations of arson, property vandalism, and physical assaults directed at law enforcement personnel during widespread protests. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the affected pocket on Tuesday, asserting that fundamentalist elements and politically motivated groups were behind the mobilization, and declared that nobody involved in the lawlessness would be spared. With these new detentions, the total number of individuals arrested in connection with the rioting has risen to 40.
The violent protests originally erupted on Sunday after the body of a missing minor girl was recovered from a local pond. Angered by the incident, local crowds blocked roads and set vehicles on fire, which escalated into a direct clash with security forces. In the wake of the initial outrage, the prime accused in the case, Prabhas Mondal, was killed during an early morning police encounter. Authorities stated that Mondal had attempted to escape custody by snatching a service weapon and firing at the escorting team during a routine crime scene reconstruction procedure.
To ensure complete transparency and adhere to the mandates of the National Human Rights Commission, the Health Department has constituted a three-member special medical board consisting of forensic experts from three government medical colleges to conduct Mondal's autopsy. Before commencing the post-mortem examination at the Kolkata Medical College, a digital X-ray was performed on the deceased to accurately determine the trajectory and entry points of the bullets. Investigators are continuing their operations using inputs extracted from the arrested rioters to identify additional conspirators who instigated the public vandalism.
