"I went to jail for Abhishek", says Anubrata Mondal after joining Ritabrata camp
Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra has launched a scathing and direct attack against Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, shortly after resigning from all his organizational roles in the pro-Mamata 'Kalighat Trinamool' faction. Speaking to reporters outside the state assembly, Mitra asserted that the party does not belong to Abhishek but to lakhs of grassroot workers. He directly blamed Abhishek for the party's current predicament, critically comparing his leadership style to that of Adolf Hitler and claiming that politics cannot be run by simply "getting off the train, putting hands on the waist, and blowing a whistle".
Mitra made explosive remarks during the press interaction, declaring Abhishek Banerjee to be "more dangerous than the Enforcement Directorate (ED)". He joined the opposition camp led by Ritabrata Banerjee and officially stepped down from several key portfolios, including Dum Dum Assembly president, national committee member, general secretary, chief whip, and president of various federations and hawkers' unions. Despite relinquishing these roles, Mitra rejected the notion of defecting from the party entirely, claiming he remains a Trinamool member who has simply crossed from "one house of Trinamool to another".
Addressing the recent ED summons issued to his family, Mitra remained defiant, noting that he has previously spent 27 months in jail and is fully prepared to cooperate with the agency again. He challenged investigators to prove any allegations that he traded public jobs for money or jewelry. Political analysts view Mitra's sudden rebellion and his open denunciation of Abhishek Banerjee as a severe and damaging blow to Mamata Banerjee's Kalighat camp during a period of intense political transition in West Bengal.
