Former Trinamool Congress councillor Mohammad Rustam of Howrah Municipal Corporation was arrested on charges of extortion and assaulting police personnel and was produced before the Howrah Court on Saturday. According to police sources, Rustam and his associates allegedly pelted stones at and attacked police during an incident linked to the murder of a real estate promoter in the Pilkhana area. Police also alleged that he extorted money from local promoters through intimidation. Golabari Police detained Rustam from his residence in Pilkhana on Friday and arrested him after prolonged interrogation.
According to the information provided, Mohammad Rustam is the former councillor of Ward No. 16 of the Howrah Municipal Corporation. While he was being taken to the Howrah Court, people present at the spot shouted "Thief, thief" at him.
