Cops can't use mobile, earphones on duty; Kolkata CP issues strict ban

The Kolkata Police has prohibited its personnel from using mobile phones, earphones, or headphones while performing official sentry and active duties. Issued by Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda, the directive explicitly warns that any violation of these new guidelines will attract immediate and strict disciplinary action. The official order has been distributed across all units to eliminate workplace distractions and reinforce public safety standards.

The immediate decision stems from repeated observations where on-duty security personnel, particularly those stationed outside police stations at night and in the early morning hours, were found distracted by their screens. Many were reportedly caught engaged in phone calls or listening to music with their earphones plugged in, compromising station security. Because sentry personnel carry the vital responsibility of monitoring individuals entering and exiting police facilities, undivided attention remains essential.

While a generic ban on workplace mobile usage was previously established, a section of the force frequently bypassed the restrictions. Under the updated guidelines, the top brass clarified that minor operational exemptions remain in place, allowing personnel to use their mobile devices if there is a special or urgent official need. Strict monitoring will be enforced across all jurisdictions to ensure compliance and prevent future negligence.
