Hooghly Trinamool president Asit Majumdar arrested before Mamata Banerjee's Martyrs' Day rally

Hooghly District Trinamool Congress President and former Chinsurah MLA Asit Majumdar was arrested on Tuesday before he could leave for Mamata Banerjee's Martyrs' Day rally. According to the information provided, police arrived at his residence in Hooghly while he was preparing to travel to the programme at Taramandal. He was taken to the police station, where he was allegedly detained for several hours before being formally arrested. The reason for his arrest has not been disclosed.

According to the information provided, Asit Majumdar was among those arrested on May 30 after a road blockade in Chinsurah protesting the alleged harassment of Abhishek Banerjee. Police had registered a suo motu case, alleging that protesters obstructed police personnel while they were clearing the blockade. Ten people, including Asit Majumdar, Chinsurah Vice-Chairman Partha Saha, and Trinamool leader Mirza Sanowar, were arrested in that case and were later granted bail.

The information also states that Asit Majumdar was subsequently arrested in a rape case and later secured bail. Tuesday's arrest marks another instance in which he has been taken into police custody. The grounds for the latest arrest have not yet been made public.
