A devastating fire broke out in Flat-5D of C Block in VIP Tower, located in the Laketown police station area, at around 12:05 am. The flat, belonging to businessman Mahendra Poddar, caught fire due to a short circuit in the AC. The fire quickly spread and engulfed the furniture in the flat, reducing it to ashes.
The fire department was immediately informed, and five fire tenders were dispatched to the site. The state fire minister, Sujit Bose, also reached the spot upon receiving the news and oversaw the firefighting efforts until the fire was brought under control.
According to preliminary investigations, the lack of proper fire extinguishing systems in the flat exacerbated the situation. As a result, the state fire minister has ordered an inquiry into the matter to ensure that such incidents are avoided in the future.
The timely response of the fire department and the efforts of the firefighters ensured that the fire did not spread to other flats in the building. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring proper fire safety measures in buildings to prevent such disasters.
